ABOUT

Yenizel Alvarez is a Mexican American artist from Houston, Texas who primarily focuses on ceramics as her medium of choice. Through her work she explores themes such as identity as a first-generation individual, cultural background, femininity, family struggles, and personal experiences. When creating, Yenizel approaches her goals by connecting with her vulnerable side and expressing raw emotions as it helps guide her towards shaping an organic response to the theme. Working with one of Earth's rawest materials, she harnesses both knowledge and technique to push the medium to its limits as a way to communicate with her community and with those outside of her culture.

As an undergrad student, Yenizel is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Art degree with the focus of ceramics at Texas State University where she is expected to graduate in December 2025. Based on her history, she began her academic journey at Lone Star Community College in Houston, where she earned an Associates of Arts before transferring to Texas State. With navigating higher education largely on her own, Yenizel has overcome challenges of being the first in her family to pursue a college degree. This experience has not only strengthened her dedication towards her practice but has deepened her understanding of using her education as a tool for self-empowerment and cultural expression.
